Energy Oasis Wins Major Consultancy Tender for Renewable Energy Projects with York Council

Energy Oasis is thrilled to announce that we have secured a significant consultancy tender with York Council, marking a monumental achievement in our commitment to local sustainable energy solutions. This prestigious feasibility study partnership focuses on two primary projects: the installation of an onshore wind turbine north of Wigginton and the development of a solar charging hub at the Grimston Bar Park-and-Ride. These projects are set to significantly boost the region's renewable energy capacity and contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

Onshore Wind Project

Wastewater Treatment Plant Zone, North of Wigginton

Part of the ambitious City of York Local Area Energy Plan involves the installation of a wind turbine in the Hambleton area, north of Wigginton. The turbine is strategically positioned to feed into the grid, given its distance from major consumers. However, local entities such as the wastewater treatment plant to the northeast of Strensall, Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy, and Queen Elizabeth Barracks could also benefit from power purchase agreements (PPAs).

  • Location: North of Wigginton (Hambleton area)

  • Size: 2 MW (approximately enough power for 750 homes)

Solar Charging Hub Project

Grimston Bar Park-and-Ride Solar Charging Hub

The plan also involves the development of a major solar deployment near the Grimston Bar park and ride facility. This site, located within the Wheldrake to Kexby zone, is also in proximity to the east campus of the University of York and the university's sport village. A 30 MW solar array will be installed, capable of generating enough power to supply numerous EV chargers and university buildings under favourable conditions.

  • Location: Wheldrake to Kexby

  • Size: 30 MW (approximately enough power for 8,000 homes)

At its peak output, this substantial solar array will generate enough power to supply 600 rapid 50 kW EV chargers or nearly 4,300 fast 7 kW chargers, significantly supporting the region's transition to electric vehicles and renewable energy.

Local Support

“City of York Council are committed to tackling the climate emergency and supporting the city of York to be net zero carbon by 2030. These projects represent significant opportunities to create new renewable energy generation in the city, reducing carbon emissions, improving security of supply and creating new employment opportunities. We’re very much looking forward to working with Energy Oasis on this project” - Shaun Gibbons | Head of Carbon Reduction, York Council

Winning the Tender

"Winning this tender with York Council is a testament to Energy Oasis's dedication to delivering innovative and sustainable energy solutions. We are excited to embark on this journey and look forward to making a significant impact on the City of York's Journey to net zero helping the local people and businesses to be able to buy and use their own locally generated green electricity."
